An all day guided rafting trip through spectacular Santa Elena Canyon was certainly the highlight of our week long camping trip to Big Bend NP.  Santa Elena Canyon Is the most majestic of the three major canyons along the course of the Rio Grande in Big Bend NP. The canyon’s walls rise vertically about 1,500′ from the river’s edge.  The Rio Grande still had a good flow during the 1990’s before the drought of the 2000’s set in. The river had a number of good rapids and tricky boulder fields to maneuver through. Trevor and I had a couple of rest stops where we could explore side canyons. There was even a spring that seeped from the walls of the canyon that offered cool fresh drinking water.
